Don't skip this month's Art of Engineering, it's hilarious and truly fitting for a Friday and while you watch it and relax a bit, remember that registratrions are closing today for the Users' Conference.
We are also looking forward to our Go-Kart day of tommorrow (1 July) with our lucky customers who were selected in the lucky draw at last year's conference. If you aren't one of them, let's hope that you will be lucky enough to be selected this year! If it was still on your ToDo list to register, or we need to reserve your seat, please do it now since we need to finalise the numbers with the caterers early next week. As long as you don't miss your networking event of the year and it will be great to catch up with you again.
We'll also co-host a special Fatigue training event (using CAEfatigue) from 24 to 26 July, presented by Marco Veltri from Hexagon with over 20 years of experience in solutions implementation in fatigue, stress analysis, dynamics, vibrations, loads management, and robust design.
If you missed the anouncement on our LinkedIn page, a new product, Elements, was added to the MSC One portfolio. There is too much to say about it here, so check out the Product of the Month and New Releases section for more detail.
If you wondered what a true Dutchman with a Springbok Rugby shirt looks like, we can show you. We met up with our technical contacts at Hexagon | MSC Software in Athens last month and being the first meeting since the Covid-19 pandemic, it was really good to meet up with old friends and rekindle those strong relationships with the various technical product experts and developers. We share more about that too.
On another note, we are very proud to be hosting a special Adams Modeler Condensed Course for students next week. When the number of registrations started to explode, we had to scramble to ensure everyone will be able to attend the meeting online before reaching the limit of number of attendees. It is indeed a good problem to have.
Hope to see you at the conference soon.

When - 27 July 2023
Where - CSIR International Convention Centre
The SIMTEQ team has attended this year’s annual Hexagon | MSC Software conference. This has been the first one since the Covid-19 disruptions. Since we value our relationships with our suppliers and clients as much as our passion for engineering, the opportunity was fully exploited to re-establish connections with our MSC Software colleagues and to get updated on the latest technology developments from the Hexagon ecosystem.
It has been the first time that all the partners of three business units of Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence (Design and Engineering (MSC Software), Production Software and Metrology) have been together at a single event, called Partner Connect 2023. It represented new beginnings, new connections and a glimpse of things that is to come in the future.
We will cover some of the discussed topics, though one thing is sure – Hexagon is gearing up for a future of innovation, collaboration and optimism. MSC Software forms a key part of their vision – inspiring strategies have been shared to keep their Design and Engineering unit at the cutting edge of CAE technology.
We also used the opportunity to spread a little bit of Springbok merchandise amongst our peers who always support our rugby team…
Whether more products will join the pioneering MSC Software and its revolutionary licensing systems, is more a matter of “when” rather than “if”. As we speak, the acquisition of the Austrian-based Additive Manufacturing specialist company, CADS Additive, has been announced.
This month’s Art of Engineering, brought to you by 3Blue1Brown, is less serious than usual, but it still brings to the fore a very important fact that all engineers, scientists or more generally put everyone should heed. Never implicitly trust patterns. Following a pattern can be a great way to simplify or predict complex behaviour, but it always comes with the risk that if you predict beyond where you’ve tested you might end up singing something more crass than Hallelujah.
This is especially true in today’s world of AI predictions where people implicitly trust that the AI code can predict the correct answer based on a limited set of inputs. But don’t throw your hands up in the air and give up on patterns or AI for that matter, just be diligent and critical of the answer and test or verify where you can.
PS. I use ChatGPT regularly and even asked it for help with this article and even though I barely used 10% of its recommendations this piece of comedic genius came out of it:
“So, remember, folks: trust patterns as much as you trust a squirrel holding a chainsaw. Use 'em wisely, question 'em boldly, and for heaven's sake, verify like your engineering degree depends on it!”

Patran 2023.1 is now available at the Software Download Center. Click here to learn about What’s New in Patran 2023.1. In this release, the focus was on hygiene and defect fixing. Some main highlights of this release include: • Defect fixing in the area:
• New Nastran File Import: MSC Nastran has deprecated the i4 format. Therefore, a new Nastran File Import routine for Patran had to be developed. Beginning with the Patran release of 2023.1 the new Nastran File Import is now the default. One of the main advantages of the new import is that if one card is not known in Patran, Patran will skip this card and will continue to import the model (in former releases Patran stops the import and you cannot see the model) • New CAD format import support: Japanese automobile companies requested to support the following two formats 1.STEP XML+JT, 2.PLMXML+JT. These two formats you can access via the CAD interface in Patran. • EGL backend for OpenGL rendering with Remote Desktops: In order to support EGL backend with remote desktops, there was the need to use the Qt component which is built with EGL protocol. Qt 5.15 is being built with EGL protocol. Patran 2023.1 supports now EGL protocol. • Support of SOL400 Nastran cards: Nastran entries FORCE1/FORCE2 and MOMENT1/MOMENT2 are to be supported as a new load type in the Patran Loads and Boundary Conditions (LBCs) application. These types of loads are known as Follower Forces. A new Follower Force LBC is to be created and the forward translator is to write the appropriate FORCE1, FORCE2, MOMENT1, or MOMENT2 entry. On import of a Nastran input file containing any of these entries, the Patran database is to be stuffed with the appropriate Follower Force LBC. • Support RBE3 with SPC on the dependent node (as allowed by automset or rigid=lagrange): Patran shows an acknowledgment message and writes SPC with the job when the constraints are defined on a dependent node of an MPC/RBE3. Patran writes SPC, MPC in MSC Nastran Structural, Implicit Nonlinear & Thermal preferences. PARAM AUTOMSET YES is also written in MSC Nastran Structural Preference. • HDF5 Post-Processing Perturbation: The customer wants to see the eigenmodes on the deformed model. If the customer selects a perturbation result, Patran automatically chooses the right deformed structure and plots the eigenmodes on the deformed model. You can access this functionality in the implicit preferences and Patran supports the following plots for perturbation: deformed, fringe, quick and marker plots. • Support for RELDISP results postprocessing from MSC Nastran: A new type of DISPLACEMENT result was introduced in Nastran 2021.3 called RELDISP. It is the Displacement results relative to a reference grid. It is useful when a user wants to postprocess displacements with reference to a moving grid for example. RELDISP is described in Nastran Release Guide 2021.3. |
