Hi %FIRSTNAME%,

When times are tough and you struggle under the weight of everyday challenges, it's easy to forget about the achievements along the way that were also achieved with hard work, sweat and tears. We are so relieved that we can now celebrate the 25 years of excellence at this year's Users' Conference since MSC Nastran landed in South Africa. It's high time that we come together again to celebrate and share in each other's victories and solved challenges. MSC-Africa was established in Dec of 1995 and Clinton Stone will share some memorable milestones of our customers during his time at the helm of the company, not only to look back at times past, but to be reminded about what is possible when we put our forces together.

Have you ever wondered what the three elements of the SIMTEQ logo represent?

"...one can be overpowered, but two together can put up resistance. A three-ply cord doesn't easily snap." - Ecclesiastes 4:12.

Our product of the month is Actran, reminding us of the close relationship between music and noise and don't forget about all the upcoming events, webinars and training opportunities. Let's stay sharp together!

Regards

Product of the Month: Actran
Actran_Banner

What does musical instruments and vehicles have in common? Actually, quite a lot. If you like sports cars, you may be tempted to say they both can make beautiful sounds. Or that interior acoustics in a vehicle is as important as the sound quality of a musical instrument.

Actran is acoustic modelling software that is used in a wide range of applications: From musical instrument design to noise in vehicle / aircraft cabins and fan noise in aircon ducts.

Actran can model the sound radiation due to vibrating structures. This is done by solving a coupled acoustic-structural model which means that vibrations can cause sound and sound can cause vibration. To do this, a modal analysis of the structure is performed in software such as Nastran. The result file is then used by Actran for the structural part of the model while Actran adds the acoustic elements and boundary conditions. The model is solved as a coupled system in Actran with no further need to access any external structural solver. What this allows is the calculation of the cabin noise due to engine and/or gearbox vibration.

In addition, it allows external noise to excite the structure, then the structure can transmit the sound to the inside of the structure. This can be used to model the noise level inside an aircraft cabin due to the propellor's noise.

Speaking of cabins, since the only way to make the interior of a cabin immune to external sounds is to make the cabin either infinitely stiff or infinitely heavy, we need a way to absorb some of the noise inside to stop internal sound reflections from making things worse. This is done by adding a porous material or a poro-elastic material. The porous material absorbs energy by using the air-friction due to the porous medium to restrict some of the air-velocity generated by the acoustic waves. A poro-elastic material is a porous medium that can move, thereby changing the absorption characteristic of the porous material. A typical example of porous material is the cloth used in vehicle cabin roofs and the floor mats.

These are just some of the functionalities available in Actran. Some others are the ability to model acoustics in the frequency or time domain, calculating acoustic modes and modelling sound radiation (e.g., from a vehicle's exhaust or a fan). Both internal and external acoustics and a combination with internal and external regions can be modelled.

What does musical instruments and vehicles have in common? Apart from the examples above, another thing they have in common is that both are modelled using Actran to improve their acoustics.

Actran is available in both MSC One and MSC One StartEdition. Contact us if you would like to know more or for assistance to get started.
The Art of Engineering
3Blue1brown

If you haven't seen the work of Grant Sanderson, the author of the YouTube channel 3Blue1brown, we highly recommend it. In this brilliantly animated mathematics video, he explains what a Fourier series is, how it relates to heat transfer (step function) and how a Fourier series can even be used to draw a sketch of Fourier himself (or anything really).
